The Women’s Club of Norwell

A NOTE FROM BARB HUMPREYS….
Happy 2011 Members!

The Ten X Club hosted a grand opening fashion show and silent auction on December 9th and have donated the proceeds of $588 from that evening!   (I went in to ask for a Turkey Trot donation that Family Fitness always had given and in addition to my request, I was also told that they wanted to donate the proceeds to their grand opening!). We are grateful for their amazing donation and for thinking of the Women’s Club!

The wine tasting committee is well underway planning the April 8th “Raise a Glass to Charity” wine tasting dinner at Black Rock Country Club in Hingham.  See below for committee details.   I wanted to stress that if you have connections to a business and think they may be willing to donate a silent auction item to contact Pat Bigger or Jane Rohan.  I guarantee you will not be placed on the committee. I have already received 2 silent auction items by just asking the business that I frequent and many don’t think twice to donate to increase their local exposure.

The dance committee is looking for volunteers for this Friday’s dance at the Town Hall at 7:30 pm.  We have already raised $3,000 in just 3 dances so far this year so it would be great to keep hosting these dances. Contact Anna Brown at annacbrown@comcast.net or Adrienne Vavpetic at adrienne.vavpetic@comcast.net if you can volunteer.  Thanks Anna and Adrienne for your great work!

Please contact Jessica Chase to pay your $30 membership dues (email her at jmchase2@comcast.net if you aren’t sure if you have paid yet since it’s easy to forget.).   Currently only 43 out of 98 members have paid.  We appreciate your continued membership since these dues add up and help the club raise money for all the local charities and schools.   Just by being a member you are helping us raise our funds!
The Bunny Breakfast committee is in the process of planning the April 9th event.  See below for details and mark your calendars.

Sincerely,
Barb Humphreys

NWC UPCOMING EVENTS

WINE TASTING – FRIDAY, APRIL 8 – BLACK ROCK COUNTRY CLUB – HINGHAM, MA

As many of you know, our annual major fundraiser this year will be a wine tasting dinner at the Black Rock Country Club in Hingham.  Our goal is to have 200 guests and more than half the tables have been reserved as of this writing.  Reservations are $75 per person and checks should be submitted at the time of making the reservation.  Seats will be limited to 8 people per table, so if members and their guests wish to reserve a complete table, reservations need to be made as soon as possible.  The chef at Black Rock has created a great four-course menu which will be paired with red and white wines.  Any special dietary issues should be made known to Pat Bigger, in order than the chef can accommodate the guest(s). To limit our expenses, we will not be printing and sending tickets.  Guests will check in as they arrive.  We hope that we will see many current and past NWC members.  We have some great entertainment planned and some surprises too!

We have commitments for some live and silent auction items, but more are needed.  If any members or their friends/family have a donation of an item or service, please contact Jane Rohan at 781-987-1448 or email her at janemrohan@yahoo.com.  For tickets, contact Pat Bigger at 781-659-3465 (h) 781-640-7542 (c) or by email at tpbigger@aol.com Checks for payment should be made payable to the Norwell Women’s Club and sent to 2 Loring Drive, Norwell, MA 02061.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Friends of the Norwell Public Library are pleased to announce the Second Annual Antique Appraisal Day scheduled to be held at the Norwell Middle School on
Saturday, March 5, 2011.

Last year the event was fully subscribed. We welcome folks from near and far, and we encourage you to think about what items you would like appraised this year.
All proceeds support Norwell Public Library programs, such as Dinner & a Movie, book club, computer instruction, “Books & Bubbles”, puppeteers, storytellers, animal programs, author talks, museum passes, and much more.  The Norwell Public Library has a rich offering of programs open to the public and described on the Library website:  www.norwellpubliclibrary.org

Skinner Auctioneers & Appraisers has been holding Appraisal Days for over 25 years.  Two Skinner appraisers will be available to appraise up to three articles per person.
Appraisal Days are “general” meaning that individuals can bring items from virtually all collecting areas: porcelain, pottery, toys, dolls, silver, paintings, furniture, rugs, and collectibles. Please note that coins, stamps, jewelry, and musical instruments cannot be appraised at this event. Substitute good quality photos for fragile or large items. For services of china or silver, one example with a list of the number of pieces is acceptable.

“Events like Antique Appraisal Day bring our community together and help publicize the Library programs” according to Russ Paulin, one of the event organizers.  Here is a perfect opportunity to have some fun supporting the Norwell Public Library, while finding out what Aunt Edna’s lamp is worth!  For further information about Antique Appraisal Day, visit the Norwell Public Library website or the Friends of the Norwell Public Library event website at friendsofnorwellpubliclibrary.org or phone the Norwell Library at 781-659-2015.

WINE TASTING – FRIDAY, APRIL 8 – BLACK ROCK COUNTRY CLUB – HINGHAM, MA

Raise a Glass to Charity!

We’re brining back one of our most popular fundraisers, the Wine Tasting Dinner that we have hosted many years in the past!  As many of you know, we are taking a break from our fabulous fashion show and will host a Wine Tasting Dinner at Black Rock Country Club in Hingham on Friday, April 8, 2011.  While that date sounds very far off, we began taking paid reservations at our Holiday Ornament and Cookie Swap and have already sold 25% of the seats in one night!  Mark Lewis and MS Walker Wine and Spirits will be providing the wine.  We have a wonderful sommelier booked who has access to a great portfolio of many different wines.  The chef at Black Rock CC, formerly of the Boston Harbor Hotel’s Meritage Restaurant, has developed a fabulous menu for even the most discriminating palette!  While the Barker Tavern staff always did a magnificent job for us, we have outgrown the size of their dining room. We have some great entertainment, silent and live auction items with a very “entertaining” auctioneer, and more surprises!  Tickets are $75 per person; tables of 8 can be reserved for $600.  So, gather your friends and reserve your seats asap!  This event is open to everyone. Chatter – Nov 2010

Dear Women’s Club Members,

It’s time for our annual ornament and optional cookie swap on December 2nd at the home of Cheri Farley.  This is such a fun night of just socializing and re-connecting with our Norwell friends.  With a busy time of year approaching, it’s nice to take time for ourselves and re-energize our body and spirit.  Please RSVP to Ellen Allen (ellenrob@comcast.net) and she will indicate whether you need to bring a bottle of wine or appetizer. With the turning back of the clocks, winter is approaching and the Women’s Club is involved in many great programs to help other people, such as Adopt a Family, supporting the Cranberry Hospice by sponsoring a tree at the Festival of Trees on Friday, December 3rd – Sunday, December 5th, organized for many years by Liz McCarron.  Also, see below for the Company Theatre holiday show night to benefit the Campus of Caring.
The Wine Tasting Committee is also planning our April 8th event at Black Rock Country Club.  Tickets will soon be on sale.  It’s a sit-down dinner so talk to your friends and book a table of 8!  See below for details.

On October 30th we had another successful Halloween Fun Day.  Thanks to Sarah Burns and Sarah McDonald for chairing this committee again this year!

Thanks to Jill Donelan for chairing the Turkey Trot again this year.  We know it was a busy fall for her as she had a business trip to Japan weeks before the race.  Thanks to Sally Schiller for assisting me coordinate solicitations while Jill was away and to Sarah Burns for putting up posters around town– I couldn’t have done it without their help!  Thanks to Nancy Bailey, Liz McCarron, Phyllis Wenzel, and Caroline Hughes for getting up early on a Sunday morning to help with registration; to Jen McVay for helping with Saturday’s registration; and Phyllis of Image Resolutions for printing and donating our beautiful posters and flyers. Please call me if you are interested in assisting with next year’s race.  It’s a manageable job if the work is started by September and there are many regular donors to the race.  Thanks to Jill for chairing this committee for the past 2 years!

Please see below about membership dues.  We value your membership whether you’re an active member of a committee or just supporting the club by being a member, thereby helping us raise money for our local causes!
Sincerely,

Barbara Humphreys ~ President 781-659-2623 Barbhumphreys1@comcast.net

Chatter – Oct 2010

President’s Notes                                               October 2010

Thanks to everyone who attended our new members’ meeting last Thursday and thanks to Susie Scheller for hosting the night. There were a few new members and we welcome them. I talked about trying to simplify things for the club this yearPlease take 5 minutes to read my philosophy. I feel that we need to change the club a bit and simplify things.  Many of us are involved in other groups to raise money for the schools and our town and we have to avoid the volunteer burn out.

We discussed how “many hands make light work.” I want to avoid people not joining the club because they feel it’s too time consuming.  I understand that as time goes on, our personal situations, activities and responsibilities change.  This may mean that our timecommitment to the Club may also change.  My goal is for all of us to welcome new members, welcome back former members and find ways to continue the growth of this 51 year-old organization.  As we all know, the economy is very difficult these days which makes it even more difficult to raise the money we have in the past for other non-profits and scholarships.  We have to balance the need to raise money with those who are able to devote the time it will require to meet our financial goals.  This may mean that we may have to “simplify” our list of recipients.  Our economy is faced with “the new normal” and our club has to adjust with these times as well.  We need to find the balance between the social element of our Club and the need to give back to the community. Without change and welcoming new and current members, our club will eventually become less effective and unable to achieve reasonable fundraising success. We will not be hosting a fashion show this year which will give our members a break from the heavy demand an event of that size and success requires.  We thank Heather Creel for her creativity, drive, not to mention her commitment to take this event to the next level for the last three years.  Additionally, thanks to her committees over the last three years for the hard work and dedication in making this event a “NWC record for fundraising”.  The Executive Board and those who worked so hard on this event all agree that we need to take a break.

We’ve listened to members’ feedback and our “main” event will be the return of the Wine Tasting Dinner.  So,mark your calendars for Friday, April 8, 2011 for “Raise a Glass for Charity” to be held at Black Rock Country Club!  I would like to have another New Members’/Former Members’ meeting in the spring, the purpose of which would be to celebrate our many years of successes and provide the opportunity to network with the many generations of NWC women.  When we know each other, the volunteering becomes easier, as we will find time to help out a friend.  There is NO requirement for an event or specific number of hours one has to commit to join.  We welcome everyone to join the Women’s Club and hopefully everyone will be able to devote a “little” time to help us reach our REASONABLE goals.  I welcome your feedback on this concept of “simplifying” our activities     (barbhumphreys1@comcast.net). Thank you for taking the time to read this long letter. I feel it’s important to inform you all of our attempt to simplify things.  There is a great deal of satisfaction in helping others, not to mention setting an example for our children in giving back to the community.

Warmest Regards,

Barbara Humphreys ~ President 781-659-2623 Barbhumphreys1@comcast.net

WINE TASTING EVENT –  Friday, April 8

Jane Rohan and Pat Bigger are chairing the Wine Tasting Dinner to be held at Black Rock on April 8th.  They have several volunteers, but welcome more; here is where “many hands really do make light work!”  I would like to suggest if you have a business that you frequent and think that they would be able to donate an auction item, please contact Jane or Pat.  I guarantee that you will not be placed on the solicitations committee‼  It’s much easier for a person to get one item from their favorite business than to leave this up to just a small committee.  If you have an idea, drop off your one item and you’re done! Historically one of the most eagerly anticipated and successful events hosted by the Women’s Club, the Wine Tasting event is an evening of superb food with wine pairings, great auction items and a fun way to connect with friends, new and old.  All of this fun, however, doesn’t happen by itself!  So if you’re interested in donating a little bit of your time to help make this a great evening, please contact Wine Tasting Chair, Jane Rohan at 781-987-1448 or at janemrohan@yahoo.com.

ADOPT A FAMILY PROGRAM

The time has come this year for the Norwell Food Pantry to do their annual Christmas Adopt A Family Program. Last year we were able to give presents to over 250 people, we were able to do this because of the generosity of our Norwell community including the Norwell Women’s Club. The wish list will start to be turned in November 18, and we will do our best to match people up and get the emails out as quick as we can. If you are at all interested or have any questions please email or call us. If you would like to adopt an individual or a family please let us know so we can do the best to match you up with your request. For those of you who might not be interested in adopting but would still like to contribute we can always use gift cards, these are some of the locations that are requested the most, Target, Wal-Mart, Gas Card, Shaws, Stop& Shop, Hanover Mall. Thanks for all of your continued support.  All gifts need to be wrapped and labeled and dropped off at the Food Pantry at Town Hall by December 14. You can contact the Adopt a Family program at norwellfp@aol.com or by calling 781-267-9683.

To make your arrangements, contact:

Pat Bigger
tpbigger@aol.com

Chatter – Sep 2010

President’s Notes                                              September 2010
Dear Members,

Welcome back and hope everyone had a great summer.  I’m looking forward to a great year working with committee chairs and members.  We had a productive committee chair meeting in August and a well-attended meeting on September 15th.

Please reserve Thursday, October 14th for the annual New Member meeting to be hosted by Susie Scheller (116 Meeting House Lane).  Please bring along a friend to introduce them to the club.  Please email Susie to RSVP (trilogyusa@msn.com) and plan to bring a bottle of wine.
The wine tasting planning is underway and Pat Bigger (and several other people) will be assisting the wine tasting chair, Jane Rohan.  Pat is working on finding a new venue for this event.  We may switch from the Barker Tavern to be able to accommodate the many people who always wish to attend but cannot due to the size of the Barker Tavern.  We will not be having the fashion show this year so the wine tasting will be our primary fundraising event. We will pass along more information regarding the wine tasting at the New Member meeting.  Please email me or Jane if you can help with the wine tasting.  We have several great volunteers but they are still looking for a few more to keep the workload manageable.

The Turkey Trot planning is also underway by Jill Donelan and will be on Sunday, November 14th.  She is super organized but she would like to find a few volunteers to help with some details.   See below for further information.

The Halloween Fun Day will be on Saturday, October 30th from 10-12.  Please see below for more details.
Anna Brown and Adrienne Vavpetic have the dance dates all set and they are listed below.

I look forward to seeing everyone on October 14th at the new member meeting!

Warmest Regards,

Barbara Humphreys ~ President 781-659-2623 Barbhumphreys1@comcast.net
