Dear members,

Welcome back from Spring Break; hope everyone had a relaxing time away from the busy school days!   Thank you to Pamela Duckworth who hosted our last social meeting.  It was a lot of fun!

See below for details on our annual year-end dinnerplanned by Sally Schiller and Melanie Johnson to be held on Wednesday, June 8th.   Sally will host the night again this year and dinner will be catered by Plated Gourmet.  Please either send Sally $25 for your reservation or pay on line at the Women’s Club website (norwellwomensclub.org.) Please sign up by May 25th so we can get final numbers to the caterer.

The wine tasting event on April 8th at Black Rock was a huge success – with profits estimated to be about $20,000‼‼  Thank you to Pat Bigger, Jane Rohan, and their committee members who worked together to make this event so successful.  We had great wine, great food and heard wine details from a Master Sommelier (one of very few people given this title since 1970!).  Our live auction was spiced up with Jim Wells, who did a great job engaging the crowd for the live auction.  Despite the untimely fire alarm caused by harmless smoke in the kitchen that went off after the 2nd item, most people stayed to make the remaining several auction items a success.

I will be president of the club for one more year. I’m in the process of seeing which committee chairs will stay on (thanks to the many who said yes already!).  We will be looking for wine tasting and turkey trot road race chairs for next year.  Please call me if you would like to chair either of these committees. Sally Schiller and Melanie Johnson created the current format for the November race which works well.  I thank Sally for her assistance this year while Jill Donelan was away on business for a few weeks.     Thank you, Pat, for becoming a wine co-chair with Jane.  Your extensive Women’s Club experience is what resulted in our huge profit!  Pat has been a great leader for the Women’s Club for many years chairing almost all committees along with being president.

Reiko Beach has completed the yearbookCompanies have been very generous this year with ads so please pay special attention to our ads and give them business whenever possible.  We rely heavily on local businesses to support our club through direct donations for events and by getting free/subsidized business.  A big thank you goes out to Phyllis Wenzel of Image Resolutions digital color printing experts for always being so generous with our printing needs!  Also thank you Reiko Beach of TRB Design Inc. for keeping our website up-to-date and for your computer expertise in helping us with this newsletter!

Sincerely,
Barb Humphreys, President, Norwell Woman’s Club

HUGE SUCCESS!!!!    WINE TASTING UPDATE

A message from Pat Bigger…….

As many of you have heard, the Wine Tasting Dinner at Black Rock Country Club was a huge success thanks to the many donors and our 202 guests who attended.  It was a beautiful venue, great food and wine, and truly an entertaining evening.  We believe that the evening set a financial milestone for the Club raising over $21,000 for our charities.  Many thanks go to our committee members, particularly Jane Bogaty who arranged the beautiful table centrpieces, Phyllis Wenzel of Image Resolutions for the design and printing of our posters and post cards and the printing of our programs. Wendy Bawabe of Bawabe Designs for the design of our program and a BIG thanks to Reiko and Tom Beach of TRB design, inc. for the many hours spent in developing our historical slide show.  Lastly, a big “thanks” goes to Pamela Duckworth, our Financial Ace who managed the auctions brilliantly.  As in some past years, we created a Community Board, the revenue of which will go to the Council on Aging to help with the furnishings of  their expansion project.  Silvia Murphy and Nancy Bailey did a great job promoting the BB to our members, many of who graciously donated an item or service which raised $1,370!  We will be looking for someone to chair this event next year, so if anyone is interested, please contact Barb Humphreys at barbhumphreys1@comcast.net.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING…….

SOLD OUT!!!   WINE TASTING – FRIDAY, APRIL 8 – 6:30pm – BLACK ROCK COUNTRY CLUB – HINGHAM, MA

Our Wine Tasting Dinner will feature a four-course meal, music by the NHS Jazz Band and wine tastings provided by Vin Divino and Master Sommelier, Damon Ornowski will be providing and presenting the wines.

At the Wine Tasting, we are going to have a great Community Board adorned with many pictures of our much out-of-date Council On Aging (COA) facility, with crowded work spaces and inadequate handicap access.  In reviewing the Club’s donations of the years, our Committee realized that we have done little for our seniors in town.  Therefore, to help the efforts of the renovation of the COA facility, our goal is to replace their heavy and broken multi-use tables and uncomfortable metal chairs.  Our goal is to provide them with lightweight tables that can be easily moved and chairs with cushioned seats.  This furniture is used every day for lunches, craft classes, various board games, cards, etc.

So, how can you help?  Our goal is gather items and services the descriptions of which will posted on our Community Board the night of April 8th.  If you, a family member or friend can help with this effort, please contact Nancy Bailey at nancy.bailey@rocklandtrust.com or Silvia Murphy at brianandsilvia@verizon.net.  Be creative…we’ve received donations of services, deserts, flower arrangements, babysitting and dog walking.  For those of you who are unable to attend the event and wish to donate to the COA Project, please make your check payable to the Norwell Women’s Club and send it to our PO Box 834.  The donations received will be added to the funds collected from the Community Board.  We hope to make this a win win for everyone.  Our seniors will be delighted and most appreciative.

See you there!

The Women’s Club of Norwell

A NOTE FROM BARB HUMPHREYS….
Hello Members!

The wine tasting committee is making lots of progress planning the April 8th “Raise a Glass to Charity” wine tasting dinner at Black Rock Country Club in Hingham.  More than 150 tickets have been sold!  Please email Pat Bigger at tpbigger@aol.com if you would like to reserve a ticket or an entire table.    If you have connections to a business and think they may be willing to donate a silent auction item to contact Pat Bigger or Jane Rohan. See below for details.

Not Your Average Joe’s in Norwell has selected the Women’s Club as Charity of the Month for March.  The NWC will get 15% of both take-out or dine-in orders every Tuesday night during the month of March (there are 5 Tuesdays in March!).  Please try and take advantage of great food for your family and also help the club raise money.  See below to print the coupon.  Friends and family are welcome to use the coupon too so email it to your non-club friends.

Charles David Salon will be hosting a FREE Norwell Women’s Club day on Sunday, March 27th from 1-3.  Jane Iredale will be teaching us the latest in make up application while we enjoy a wine tasting sponsored by Marsh’s Liquors and delicious appetizers. Friends and family are welcome.

The next dance is Friday, March 4th at the Town Hall at 7:30 pm.  Contact Anna Brown at annacbrown@comcast.net or Adrienne Vavpetic at adrienne.vavpetic@comcast.net if you can volunteer.  Thanks Anna and Adrienne for running these dances – we have raised over $3,000 so far!  I know it might not be your first choice for your Friday night, but just think about the possible $5,000 we can raise for the 5 dances!  Roger and I have already volunteered so we only need 5 more people!

Please contact Jessica Chase to pay your $30 membership dues (email her at jmchase2@comcast.net if you aren’t sure if you have paid yet since it’s easy to forget.).  We appreciate your continued membership since these dues add up and help the club raise money for all the local charities and schools.   Just by being a member you are helping us raise our funds!

The April 9th Bunny Breakfast is being planned.  Please email Cristina McCullough at cristina_mcc928@yahoo.com if you can donate a baked good or a box of coffee.  We are trying not to ask for donations for these food items to avoid wearing out our donations requests.  See below for details and mark your calendars.

WINE TASTING – FRIDAY, APRIL 8 – BLACK ROCK COUNTRY CLUB – HINGHAM, MA

Raise a Glass to Charity!

Tickets are going fast for our major fundraiser of the 2010-2011 year!  Our Wine Tasting Dinner on Friday, April 8th at 6:30 PM will take place at the Black Rock Country Club in Hingham.  Their award-winning chef has planned a great 4-course menu for the evening.  The NHS Jazz Band will be providing their great music again this year during the reception.  Red and white wines will be provided by Vin Divino, M.S. Walker Fine Wines and Spirits and Master Sommelier, Damon Ornowski, will be providing and presenting the wines.  We have received some outstanding items for our live and silent auctions, that will provide a great shopping experience for all!   Additionally, the committee has decided to once again include a Community Board, the proceeds of which this year will go to the Council on Aging’s major expansion.  We believe this is truly a great cause as their facility (much outdated and in need of expansion) can be enjoyed by all Norwell Seniors; in addition, it serves as a second emergency shelter for our town.  For those who are unable to attend, but wish to make a contribution to our Community Board Project, please make checks payable to the Women’s Club of Norwell and label it “COA Fund”.  Checks can be sent to Pat Bigger, address below.

We encourage you to make your reservations for this event asap, as we have only two full tables remaining.  Reservations may be made on our website, www.norwellwomensclub.orgor by sending a check made payable to the Women’s Club of Norwell to Pat Bigger 2 Loring Drive.  We hope to see you on April 8th!

COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Friends of the Norwell Public Library are pleased to announce the Second Annual Antique Appraisal Day scheduled to be held at the Norwell Middle School on
Saturday, March 5, 2011.

Last year the event was fully subscribed. We welcome folks from near and far, and we encourage you to think about what items you would like appraised this year.
All proceeds support Norwell Public Library programs, such as Dinner & a Movie, book club, computer instruction, “Books & Bubbles”, puppeteers, storytellers, animal programs, author talks, museum passes, and much more.  The Norwell Public Library has a rich offering of programs open to the public and described on the Library website:  www.norwellpubliclibrary.org

Skinner Auctioneers & Appraisers has been holding Appraisal Days for over 25 years.  Two Skinner appraisers will be available to appraise up to three articles per person.
Appraisal Days are “general” meaning that individuals can bring items from virtually all collecting areas: porcelain, pottery, toys, dolls, silver, paintings, furniture, rugs, and collectibles. Please note that coins, stamps, jewelry, and musical instruments cannot be appraised at this event. Substitute good quality photos for fragile or large items. For services of china or silver, one example with a list of the number of pieces is acceptable.

“Events like Antique Appraisal Day bring our community together and help publicize the Library programs” according to Russ Paulin, one of the event organizers.  Here is a perfect opportunity to have some fun supporting the Norwell Public Library, while finding out what Aunt Edna’s lamp is worth!  For further information about Antique Appraisal Day, visit the Norwell Public Library website or the Friends of the Norwell Public Library event website at friendsofnorwellpubliclibrary.org or phone the Norwell Library at 781-659-2015.
