Title: 7th and 8th grade Women’s Club Dance
Location: Norwell Town Hall
Description: Dances will be held this year on Friday January 25th and Friday March 22nd 7:30-10:00. The cost is $7.00 and tickets must be purchased in advance during lunches the Thursday and Friday before each dance. Below are details and guidelines, please review these before the dance.

We are in need of the following:

* 10 Parent Chaperones the night of the dance

* 2 Volunteers to sell tickets Thursday and/or Friday before each dance

* Volunteer with a BJs or Costco membership willing to pick up and deliver boxes of Candy to be sold at the dance (more details given to volunteer)

* Volunteer to help pick up and deliver drinks/cups (more details given to volunteer)

Please consider volunteering to help chaperone - We will not be able to continue to hold the dances without parent support!

DANCE GUIDELINES AND CONDUCT EXPECTATION:

Dances begin at 7.30 PM, not earlier.
Dances end at 10.00 PM, not later.
Dances are only open to Norwell residents.
No backpacks, purses, bags, hats, food, beverages, cameras or cell phones are permitted in the dance room. As a general rule, the less you bring the better, as the “coat room” is quite cramped. Students may ask to use a chaperone’s cell phone to call home if needed.
No weapons or sharp implements are permitted (including laser pointers or tasers).
No pushing, shoving, wrestling, fighting, running, jumping or lifting or any type of threatening physical behavior will be permitted.
To protect town property, no gum chewing, throwing of any candy, garbage or drinks, climbing on the stage, chairs, or windowsills or any other destructive behavior will be permitted.
The dress code in effect at the Norwell Middle School is required for all dances. Attendees not in compliance will be asked to change or leave the dance (with a parent).
Appropriate dancing only. This means no grinding, no hands resting below the waist during slow dances, no kissing and no lap sitting.
All food and drink must be disposed of in the trash bin before reentering the dance room.
Swearing and inappropriate comments/language are not permitted.
No one many leave the dance early unless accompanied by a parent.

Our dances have a solid reputation for “uneventful” and safe fun. We expect that this year will be no different and are looking forward to sharing this experience with your children. Candy and drinks will be sold at reasonable prices.

Membership for the 2012-2013 year is due. As a reminder membership is renewed every September. Your $30 membership fee helps support the Women’s Club mission
to serve our community. You can pay online by clicking on the link on the home page which directs you to Eventbrite or you can pay by check. Please make checks payable
to The Women’s Club of Norwell and send to PO Box 834 Norwell, MA. We are focused on building our membership this year while retaining our current members.
Please talk to your friends and neighbors about our organization and encourage them to join! Bring them to an upcoming meeting or one of our fundraising events like the
Turkey Trot which is quickly approaching on November 11^th.

Turkey Trot – November 11th!

Last call for volunteers! Thanks to everyone to date who has helped secure sponsorships and prizes and helped with the race organization. With the race less
than a week away, we are looking for race day volunteers to help everything run smoothly. Please email Jenn McVay at jannsloper@yahoo.com if you are
available to help out. If you find yourself on Sunday morning with some free time, please just head over to the High School and we will find a task for you!
Also, will anyone be finding themselves in Canton this week? We have a company donating cases of water, but it has to be picked up in Canton. Let Jenn
know and she can give you details.

Race day tasks that we need help with are:

-Registration

-Calling out 1-mile & 2-mile splits

-Directing runners on the course

-Setting up the water station (at Middle School)
-Manning the water station

-Assisting with the kids race

In order to make this year’s Turkey Trot a success, we need your help. Please consider volunteering to assist with sponsorship, advertising, registration or race day logistics. If you have volunteered in the past or have participated in the run/walk you know this is a fun community event that attracts people of all ages. Please help make this year’s race another memorable one. If you are interested in volunteering or learning more, please contact race coordinator Jenn McVay at jannsloper@yahoo.com. If you or someone you know would be interested in sponsoring the event pass their name and information along; we are looking for monetary contributions, goods, and/or services.

The date for the 6th Annual Norwell Turkey Trot is Sunday November 11, 2012. In order to make this event successful and run smoothly, help is needed both before and during the race. Here is a partial list of volunteer activities:

Pre-Race:
Marketing and Promotion: distributing flyers around town
Fundraising and Sponsorship: sending out letters to past sponsors, identifying new companies to donate goods, services or money. [Sponsorship Letter]
Registration: pre-race day registration and number pick-up (Saturday November 10th at Marathon Sports Norwell between 10am-3pm)

Race Day:
Registration: race-day registration (7:00-8:45am);
Timing/Results: posting mile markers along the course, calling out mile splits, directing runners at turns, setting up water stations, and helping at the finish line;
Kids Race Coordinator: organize registration, start/finish of 3 kids’ races
Food and Beverage: contacting local supermarkets/stores to donate food and beverages for after the race;
Food Pantry Coordinator: help collect donated items and drop them off at theNorwell Food Pantry.

Hello Women’s Club Members,

Helllo members:I hope you all had a great summer and are getting back into the school mode (for those of us who have kids in school). The club is still looking for a president to coordinate the club. Happy Spring to everyone!

I would like to thank Pat Bigger and her committee for another successful wine tasting this past March. We raised over $19,000 at the event. Our donations committee will now be reviewing donations requests.

Year-end gathering change in date and location: I had to change the date of the year-end casual gathering to May 31^st at Barbara Humphreys’ home (371 Grove Street, located on Damon Way) at 7:30 pm. Please mark your calendars for this new date and location. Please RSVP to Barb at Barbhumphreys1@comcast.net and I will assign either wine or an appetizer. We are not doing a dinner so I don’t need reservations weeks in advance. I am hoping to get a good crowd to celebrate another successful year of our club (and my last year as president).

Thanks to Kristen Jervey for organizing the egg hunt this year (skipping the breakfast part this year) and also to Maria Johnson for donating the candy for the eggs. Kristen had a great turnout and the kids were excited to have the egg hunt at the middle school!

I will also be hosting a Facebook /Twitter class this Thursday night at 7:30 for $10 per person. Reiko Beach will be giving us all the details about these social networks, including the important security settings. Come and learn how these networks affect our children’s college and job application process.

Would anyone be able to step up as next year’s president? It’s a great way to give back to the community and meet many great people that you may not have had contact with due to different aged children. We are open to any fundraising ideas to change things up too!

The NWC is going green!! The 2012 yearbooks will be available on-line only this year. What is Twitter, how it is being used by teens and what you need to know about it. Your children may be posting things that can adversely affect them without even knowing it. The internet is great but it broadens our world beyond Norwell. Bring your child, husband, or friend to get these important details. SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATE

The Women’s Club is proud to offer their continued support of High school scholarships. The committee has been at work adding to existing members that will complement the review process. Students will be submitting their applications/essays this week, with the committee beginning their reviews in the next few weeks. The scholarships are available to any eligible senior in Norwell that will be continuing their education. Checks are given after the Club receives students’ first semester grades. The committee is comprised of several Club members who may/may not have children in the Norwell school system. For the first time this year, formal guidelines will be used (adapted from the English Language Arts MCAS guidelines) to “grade” essays and to enhance the process of maintaining objectivity when reviewing the submissions. The success of many of our Club sponsored events (Wine Tasting, Fashion Show) help to determine the number of scholarships awarded. Recipients will be announced at the beginning of May. The Committee will then look forward to recognizing these honorable seniors at our upcoming end of the year festivities.
